The challenge
Mesa Gateway’s three websites ran on an in-house system more than six years old, and only administrators could change much of anything. The airport had recently changed its name, and outside sites were still repeating old information about its services, so helping search engines see the airport clearly mattered. The old sites didn’t have a sitemap for search engines to follow. Vendors who wanted to bid on airport work had to email someone to get on the vendor list.
The authority asked for one design across all three sites, copy rewritten to be short and clear, WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility, and websites its own team could keep current.
The work
We built all three sites on Foxtrot with one shared design system, each tuned for its audience.
- Live travel data on the home page. Flight status, security wait estimates and parking by lot. Staff can set parking levels and closures, and adjust security waits, whenever a feed needs a hand.
- Getting around. An accessible interactive terminal and campus map with 59 facilities, a route map and a nonstop destinations list.
- A procurement center built from scratch. Vendors sign up online for the categories they work in and register to download bid documents. Staff send each addendum to every plan holder with one click, vendors can opt in to closing-date reminders, and every download and email is logged.
- For pilots. Current fuel prices and an aircraft fee estimator covering more than 680 aircraft.
- For businesses. A directory of the companies on the airport’s campus.
- Emergency alerts that staff publish from a ready-made template, live on every page in about 30 seconds.
- Accessible documents. Every PDF is checked the moment it’s uploaded, and a PDF can be turned into an accessible web page.
- Analytics without cookies, so visitors aren’t tracked across the web and no cookie banner is needed.
- A traveler chat assistant in English and Spanish, with an Insights screen that shows staff what travelers ask.
